Hume’s Warbler in Italy: an update of its status

Abstract

Hume’s Warbler Phylloscopus humei is an Asian species increasingly recorded in Europe in recent decades. Once considered a rare vagrant in Italy, it is now observed more frequently in the country. This article reviews its current status in Italy, using verified records from national databases, ringing data and regional checklists. Most sightings come from northeastern regions, with a notable lack of records from well-monitored migration hotspots further south. Observations peak in late December, and while many birds stay only briefly, others remain for weeks or months, indicating both transient and overwintering individuals. Despite its rarity, the species is now recorded annually, with some sites hosting individuals in multiple winters. The observed trends suggest that Hume’s Warbler is becoming a regular, if still scarce, component of Italy’s winter avifauna and may increase further in the coming years.
