Slender-billed Curlew declared extinct
A new paper published in Ibis has documented the apparent extinction of the Slender-billed Curlew Numenius tenuirostris (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ibi.13368). The paper acknowledges the difficulties involved in determining whether a species is extinct, especially in the case of species that have an extensive range, are transcontinental migrants or are poorly known. In the case of Slender-billed Curlew, the breeding range remains uncertain, while the species had an extensive non-breeding range that spanned from the Mediterranean basin and the northwest African coast through the Middle East to central Asia.
